Anen, with bent knees, was down low examining the foundation with one of his architects, peering at the large cracks and missing bricks within the structure. He placed his palm against the wall and it started to crumble beneath his touch. The wear and tear that came regularly with the type of material they had used to build them in the first place was taking its toll. That was the trouble with these clay brick structures; they never lasted long enough.

“I am going to issue permission to use Ungstone for new silos. We will be heading into our rainy season soon and I do not want the rest of these silos to melt. This one looks like it will not last another wet season. Might as well build all new ones to save us the trouble of damaged grain in the long run.” Anen signaled a Master Architect to come forth, who was with surprising speed by his side a less than a moment.

“What of the cost?” he said with quill and papyrilus in his hand as he jotted down his notes.

“I will supply it. All have a right to eat.” Anen stood and dusted off his hand, walking over to the Master Architect to go over the finer details. He looked about the area as they started drawing up the plans.

Anen knew he did things differently than his father had done. He recalled his father had never really left the confines of the palace to make these kinds of decisions. Anen did not like making decisions this important behind some wall. He received a great deal of backlash from his advisors for getting too personally involved. He smiled to himself. His firm stance and philosophy was that a Pharaoh could not effectively rule the people if a Pharaoh were not familiar with the people.

What thrilled him right now was the presence of the Star, watching him with proud fascination; she certainly looked pleased in all his efforts today. Her approval was not necessary, of course, but it gave him a strong sense of accomplishment that he had it, and that pleased him to no end.
